He must have seen a female duck, he is paddling so fast he created quite some trail .
When I see the smile on his face it must be a female duck he spotted.

Thanks Fons,

Ducks are very territorial (they have no mercy for intruders) - he was likely to be defending his area and thus protecting his female from other males.
